BEAUTIFUL BARROW AND THE RED DOOR

The red door in the photo is the entrance to Julie’s house where I have been doing my laundry these past few weeks.  Inside it is warm and cozy while the snow and ice are blocked from entering, most likely intimidated by the bright red door, thank goodness.
These photos were taken this Saturday, 1/19, on my walk to Julie’s and during the wash cycle, on a walk to the post office.  The sun officially comes up over the horizon this coming Tuesday, but it was making a sneak appearance on Saturday…the bright, orange/red expanse in the distance is a welcome sign.  The sky was again the most beautiful combination of pink and blue.  I’ve never seen more beautiful skies and after only two, what seemed like short, months of darkness, this new turn of events is resurrecting my love for being here in this beautiful place.










The wind is howling outside my window at 9 am this morning and it is very dark.  I'll be looking for the top of the bright orb in the early afternoon if it dares to come up on such a windy day.

ARRIVING IN BARROW 1ST DAY OCT 10, 2012

I think someone is stuck on the ice outside my apartment window this morning. The sound of spinning wheels is alerting me to the new environment I find myself in. It must be around 3 am as it’s very dark outside, but no, it’s 9. I haven’t checked the temperature yet, but hope it is at least cold enough to be blog-worthy. I arrived to snow-covered twilight; flying into Barrow last night was magical. GOOD MORNING ON THE EVE OF A NEW YEAR

Glenn and Anne's hut at NARL Ah...I haven't written for some time now but somehow it feels right this morning.  I'm sitting at my pine desk after a wonderful night's rest in my own bed.  It’s wonderful to have taken this for granted in the past but to find renewed joy in it now. Contrasts and change seem to heighten a sense of gratitude for me, pushing me into a pleasant and welcome state of mind.  I just recently returned to my apartment after enjoying eleven days of  house/cat sitting out at one of the huts at NARL, the old Navy Arctic Research Lab.  Big Boy, Anne and Glenn’s smokey-gray, long-haired, affectionate feline was in need of companionship and feeding as well as were the two fish in the large murky tank and the multiple, active, chubby worms in the indoor compost bin. DODGING MUD PUDDLES AND PASSING PROBATION

I quickly finished up the day’s charting and cleaned off my desk before racing out the door last Monday afternoon, not wanting to be late for my six month evaluation meeting with the Deputy Director of Community Health.  The lagoon had a watery look to it and I’d found that riding in soft snow on it was nearly impossible, so I took the road between Barrow and Browerville instead on this sunny day.  It was so sunny, in fact, that quite a bit of snow and ice had melted along the road as well, forming good-sized mud puddles.  I didn’t anticipate needing fenders this early in the spring, but wished that I had already purchased them as I unavoidably bounced through more than several puddles before reaching the Health Department building.  I feel fortunate that in Barrow one can arrive at a meeting or event wearing Arctic gear, rain pants, rubber boots and a new streak of mud up one’s back and not feel out of place or conspicuous at all.  The meeting went well and I was grateful as J
