FROM BLASÉ TO ENGAGING

Last month the previously bare walls in the reception area of the Wellness Center were transformed with family-friendly, community-created artwork.  Elders, elementary school children, middle and high schoolers were invited to draw pictures that were then transferred onto wood, painted and mounted by visiting artists hosted by Hope Community Resources, an organization that empowers people with disabilities through art.  Michelle, one of the public health nurses had seen some of their collaborative work on a trip to Anchorage and was able to lobby successfully for their coming to Barrow to do projects.  On Monday morning, the local Hope Community Resources Coordinator and the visiting artists surprised the Wellness Center staff with fresh painted walls and the art work that they had helped to create, now hanging for us as well as children and their families coming to the clinic to enjoy.     Bertrand organized an open house for parents and children to come meet the artists, listen to stories and have balloon hats made.  A fun afternoon…a few photos capturing the artwork and some of the fun.

  1. The artwork is fantastic! I love how it's hung out from the wall a bit. It makes it so dimensional. What a transformation to the space!
